Carpet detection automatically boosts power when it comes into contact with rugs, and the dual side brushes help to tease out debris from corners.

The mopping performance is less impressive, but not by much. The mop rotates at a high speed and pushes down with 2.2lbs of force, effortlessly scrubbing up dirt and stains. I've also noticed that the front arms stick out slightly more than other robots, which is helpful for getting into tight corners and along baseboards. Those same front arms can be used to sweep larger objects, such as broken toys and fallen books.

The X1 Omni is notable for its massive dock that doubles as a charging base for the robot, a sink for cleaning and two 4-liter water tanks. It also houses the 2.5-liter dust bin and an 2.5 milliliter dust bin.

The base also comes with a set of control buttons that allow you to manually start a cleaning job or recall the robot or run the dock's auto-emptying process. Press two buttons to toggle the child lock. This is a wonderful feature for parents who are concerned about their children messing around with the vacuum.

Similar to other robotic vacuums, the X1 Omni utilizes its camera to spot furniture and obstacles in its path, and then avoid them. Its True Mapping 2.0 navigation system maps your home 10 times faster than conventional laser detection systems and is four times more precise at finding objects.

Unfortunately this means that the X1 Omni can occasionally get caught up in obstacles, like an electrical cord dangling across a rug, that it gets stuck and stops working until you free it. While this was rare, it was a frustrating experience when it happened and especially because the X1 Omni doesn't come with an "stuck" status alert on its application.

The X1 Omni cannot automatically switch from mopping to vacuuming mode during a cleaning session. You will have to manually switch between the two modes, which isn't too bad however, mopping pads don't get cleaned or dried between uses. This can cause mildew and mold.

The X1 Omni looks great, thanks to the Jacob Jensen design team (of Bang & Olufsen fame) who designed the sleek modern, contemporary base and mopping pad. It's a major departure from the utilitarian, black bases of competitors like Roborock and iRobot and is a refreshing view in a market which is dominated by clunky boxy models.
