Door Handle ReplacementDoor handles may seem like a small detail however, if you don't like the way they look or find them difficult to use then it's time to replace them. Installing a new door handle is simple if you've got patience.
Most modern door handles have cover plates that conceal the screws to create a stylish appearance. If your new handle doesn't already have them attached, you will have to attach them separately.
Remove the old Handle
The door handle isn't only a decoration for your home, but it's also an important safety feature that lets you to lock and unlock your door. However, as time passes, your door handle may lose its grip, appear loose, or appear old and worn out. This is a good indication that it's time to replace the door handle.
If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a serious issue since you won't be in a position to lock or unlock the door which could put you and your family at risk.
Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A broken door handle is dangerous, especially for elderly or children members who may struggle to open it. They may get trapped. Fortunately, it's fairly simple to fix a damaged door handle by replacing the
old aluminium window Handles one.
Modern door
window handles for wooden windows are usually standard sizes and should fit any door. If you are not certain if your new door handle will work, remove the old one and measure its housing holes. This will let you purchase the correct size door handle.
It is easiest to remove the old door handle by unscrewing it from the door. Usually you'll need a screwdriver. However, some door handles have an outer cover plate that hides the screws that mount them, so you'll need to pry off this to reach the screws beneath. After you have removed the handle that was previously used, take note of the way in which the spindle has been connected. This will help you align the new handle.
You can also remove the door handle by removing the latch mechanism. This is usually done with a screwdriver but you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located at the edge of the trim piece. Once you've removed the latch, take the handle off the strike plate, and then the latch off the door's edge.
Remove the Strike Plate
If you are replacing your handle, you'll want to replace the latch plate, which holds the hole which the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The packaging that the new handles arrive in will include two latch plates: a rectangular one and circular (see the above diagram that outlines the components of a door handle). If your current latch plate is rectangular, swap it to a round one, so that the latch hooks into the strike plate in a way that makes the handle easier to use.
The first step is to unscrew the screw that's holding the old latch plate in place. The screws can be very tight, and may require some force to loosen. It may be helpful to get a second person to assist in this area if it is possible.
After the screws are removed the latch will slide out of the door with ease. If the latch plate is stuck or refuses to move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This may help free the plate.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Using the wood screws that came with your new handles, attach the latch plate onto the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this can cause damage to the strike plate.
If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in its correct position, shut and then open the door to determine whether it latches and closes correctly. If it does not, you will need to adjust the strikeplate either up or down or forward or back until the door locks correctly.
If the door still moves or jiggles, then you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too shallow or the wrong size for the latch, or due to damage or a broken strike plate. If this is the case, follow the exact procedure as adjusting the strike plate, but using an iron file instead of a chisel and hammer.
Take off the Latch
The latch is a bent metal piece which slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward, allowing you to open the door. It also hooks into a hole in the frame of the door to keep your door shut. If your door shakes when you close, a new latch may be all that is needed to fix the issue.
It's difficult to see the screws that attach the latch to the door, but there's usually a tiny slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver and remove it. After taking off the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch as well as the bolts that hold it in place and the spindle in position.
If the latch cannot be easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the recessed latch slot and then gently twist or jiggle until the that the latch and handle begin to split. It is possible to repeat this process several times before you can pull the latch out.
You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without any problems after you have removed the old one. Use the new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it's correctly placed in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.
Before you install the new handle, make certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). Make sure that the size of the latch of the new handle is in line with the measurement.
You'll need a new cylinder for your lock if you're replacing the latch and handle or your existing one is damaged. If you're not switching locks the new lock should fit inside the recess you have already installed, and will work with your current keys. Be sure to choose an entry point with a rectangular cover plate that match your
window handles.
