The best robot hoover can mop and vacuum without needing your attention. It leaves your floors spotless. Its low cost and features that are high-end (such as dirt detection) are pluses.

1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive cousin the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums that we have examined. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can produce up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. Like other iRobots with premium features (including the top model) they employ intelligent mapping to design precise floor plans and eliminate household obstacles like cords and furniture leg. They also come with carpet boost which boosts the robot's power when it sees the presence of dirt on the carpet, allowing it cleaned quickly.

Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very excellent scores in our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective in removing pet hair. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top pick. One of the weaknesses of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's also prone to become stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate rooms with lots of people well during our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a good deal, especially if your office or home has a lot of unfinished floors and you're looking to save money. It's also quiet and works while you are at work or at school. It's not equipped with the edge-to-edge floor vacuuming offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping, using disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on well and aren't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has a self-emptying cradle that can be emptied by itself. If you're in need of it mop, the mopping pad can be changed for a wet one in seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its smart cleaning maps and nimble navigation make it easy to clean and effective in tackling larger particles such as pet hair. It also features strong suction and self-emptying bin. It's the best automatic vacuum and mop robot hoover for carpets, although it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop uses sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the layout of your home over time to ensure better cleaning. The app allows you to customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average compared to similar models.

You can tell the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when in a carpeted room, which helps prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also great to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It doesn't offer the same level of washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Professional+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests, X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop to complete the task of cleaning a whole home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It did a decent cleaning job on a variety of floors and rooms with different kinds of flooring, including some area carpets. Its obstacle detection was superb and it stayed clear of fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles of cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that is automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It is able to clean floors even after it vacuums. This is a feature that we haven't seen before on other robotic vacuum/mop combos.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

The robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears much like a Roomba model than the boxy units of the rivals. It's one of our most attractive robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also the most intelligent. It has advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop that has 100% in our tests thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, including cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot cleaner we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It has an intuitive mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite loud that could be problematic if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to sleep.

It's also somewhat expensive, although it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and more attractive. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and some extra cost, this is a very capable two-in-one that should satisfy most people.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with many advanced features that will let you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device, similar to Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically empty the vacuum's bin, refills the water tank, and washes and dries mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of LIDAR and structured lighting to create floorplans and identify obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also comes with a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time however, it wasn't foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a high maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vac works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home according to how dirty they tend to be.

For larger homes it's worth looking for models with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home using the app or voice commands. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also a good option. For busy families recharge functions and resume feature that allows your robot vacuums with mop vacuum to continue from where it left off can be very useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is a cleaner with more intelligence than you would imagine from its price. It's a pro at vacuuming, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops with one pad that has an oscillating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that can be washed.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to organize an automatic spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas to improve performance. The app has a range of options, including seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, meaning it can get to corners and under furniture more easily. It features a powerful 8000 Pascal suction as well as clever combs for removing pet hair. It also has the ability to create a spot-clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are shaped like adorable eyes. It's good at vacuuming but is more prone to be caught by low thresholds and is a bit more noisy than the other top robot vacuums we've tried. It also has a less intuitive app and a tiny base station that can't be used as a bin for emptying.
