Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

Item upgrades allow players to increase the item level of equippable items such as weapons, armor, and trinkets above a certain threshold. They can be purchased at any item upgrader NPC using the appropriate currency.

Upgrade components are integrated into equipment to give attribute bonuses and extra effects. These are mostly slot-restricted, however, there are certain universal upgrades.

Rerolling

A player is able to reroll an upgrade to an item in Diablo 4. This is done via the Level Up mechanic, which suspends the game and displays the four randomly chosen upgrades. The player can select one of the upgrades to continue fighting. The cost of rerolling is similar to a normal Level Up. However players should be cautious when choosing an upgrade because they will not know what the new stats will be until the item has been rerolled.

The upgrade level of an item is determined by the item's level of rarity and tier. Each upgrade level boosts the power of the item by +3. Requirements

Upgraded items are an important element of enhancing your character performance and effectiveness in battle. Item upgrades can boost an item's base stats, or even add a new prefix or suffix. The amount of stats that an item can be upgraded depends on its rarity. There are upgrades available in dungeons and raids, or purchase them from vendors. They can also be obtained in random drops or looted from other players.

There's no tenable game design solution to the issue of the "not worth it" feeling that some players feel about upgrading certain items. The game should provide more information in its compare interface about upgrades, like: "X stats gained, or X stats loss." However, this isn't practical to implement because of how much complexity goes into the comparison process. There's simply not enough space to do it properly within the UI.

Another option is to write an application that will check the requirements for upgrading an item prior to allowing it to be upgraded. This is a good option for systems with only a small amount of items that can be upgraded and have simple upgrade dependencies. A sword can be upgraded from Sword+1 to Sword+2. Upgrade components can be put into armor, weapons and trinkets. They can also be slid to gathering tools. Most upgrade components can only be replaced with an Upgrade Extractor. Glyphs are the exception, which can be salvaged by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.

Based on the type of item upgrade, upgrading an item could cost Dilithium or gold. Some upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The amount of Flightstones and Crests needed to upgrade an item is determined by the level of the item. Blizzard also sets a maximum upgrade level. Upgrading to the highest upgrade level can be costly especially when you're upgrading gear for PvE.

Item upgrades can also change the type of ammunition a weapon uses or damage die size, alter its operative or unwieldy specific weapon property, or alter its hand requirement. Certain upgrades can alter the appearance of a weapon.

While boosting stats is the main goal of upgrades to items but you should take into consideration the cost of upgrading an item before making a decision. You might decide to make use of your gold for upgrading rare items, but do not spend it on ordinary or items of the magic-tier.
