1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling, the i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is an excellent option for those who want an automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but want to manually empty the dustbin of the robot when it is full.

Both robots are adept at picking up surface debris off hard floors and carpets, and they are very good at maneuvering around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates a smart map of your home to assist the i3+ to navigate and clean efficiently. The i3+ doesn't have the same obstacle avoidance capabilities as the i7+ or other top-rated robots we test. It can get stuck on power cords and socks and have trouble moving between surfaces, such as carpet and hardwood.

iRobot recommends you clear out areas where the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, including clearing out any clutter or toys it might encounter. It's also recommended to keep the dust bin and filter clean so they do not become blocked by dirt. If the i3+'s internal bin is empty or the battery is depleted, it returns to the docking station and takes the dirt out of the docking station's external dustbin. Then it continues cleaning where it began. The i3+ EVO's batteries last for about an hour and a half continuous use, and takes about three hours to recharge.

2. Roomba by iRobot

The iRobot i7+ is a top model from iRobot’s flagship line and is packed with the latest technology. It is self-charging and self cleaning vacuum-navigating, but the most significant feature is the self-emptying bin. This removes the need for regular maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ is able to better map rooms with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and direct your robot vacuum hoover by voice or via the app.

The i7+ is faster and more agile in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also cleaned large pet hair pieces from any surface, including carpeting. Its greatest advantage over the Eufy is the self-emptying bin that eliminates major sources of maintenance and reduces the cost of maintenance.

We were also amazed by the i7+'s compatibility Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services that we used to instruct the robot to start, stop or pause its cleaning sessions and to move around the room and sweep the area. The process of connecting the i7+ to these services was simple and straightforward through the iRobot Home app. Once connected, to voice commands to the i7+, like "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home App also offers options for managing i7+ settings and monitoring the performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an all-sports car in a world of cordless vacuums that feel like minivans and buses. It is powerful enough to replace a traditional stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but also small enough to fit on a coffee table or bookcase.

The V10 is powered with a Lithium-ion battery with 7 cells of energy that produces power without fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filtration system captures allergens and expels cleaner air back into your home. The cleaning head is specially designed to drive bristles made of nylon that are stiff into carpet to suck up large crumbs and fine dust. It comes with three suction modes that can be adjusted to the specific task. It quickly switches from floor vac to handheld vacuum and back.

The model also comes with an accessory dock that can charge to 100% in about 3.5 hours and offers an easy access to two attachments as well as an wand clip. This is a huge improvement over older Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its limited run time. Its claims on the market that it can provide up to 60 minutes of running time are misleading as CR's tests have shown. This is a typical and not a remarkable time to run an electric cordless vacuum deals powered by batteries. This is still enough to vacuum the majority of a typical-sized home but not long enough to cover every area (though an additional run-through often will suffice). However, it lacks the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, such as our top picks, i3+EVO and J7+ Series. It is prone to getting stuck on cords for phones or furniture that is low and often runs out of power before returning to its home base.

It's also more robust, has a larger motor, and performs better on floors with bare or low-pile.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a name is found on all kinds of home electronics It's no surprise that they're one of the top robotic vacuum and mop makers. Their Jet Bot AI+ is packed with cutting-edge onboard tech for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app offers a variety of options to customize your robotic cleaner. This includes virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior modifications docking frequency settings, and many more. The app is simple to navigate and use similar to other Samsung devices.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors. It cleaned up 86% of dog hair (on carpet). However, it didn't do particularly well with larger objects, like cords and socks, which was disappointing. It's also a bit more expensive than the other models we tried which could be a deterrent for some buyers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that can be accessed via the app, and you can also set up a live streaming from the robot's cleaning station. This feature allows you check in on your children or pets while you're away. The filter and the dustbin can be cleaned to ensure a quick, painless clean-up. The app allows you to personalize the LED lights on top of the vacuum using different colors so you can clearly see the areas where it's focused or where it's gotten stuck.

The app also makes it simple to steer the robot manually should you need to. For instance, my living room rug has a darkly colored border that tends to cause confusion for other robots I've tested. The HRV 425BL, however was able to continue to move across the border without ever registering the edge.
