Costs
Upgrades have a few associated costs. The first is the cost of performing the upgrade. This cost depends on the new ilvl of the item and the amount of perks it will gain, and can be expensive. Upgrades to higher levels (such as Explorer to Champion or Veteran to Heroic) can be expensive.
The other is the cost of the materials needed for an upgrade. These are typically Power Dices (dropped from monsters 21+), Minerals and Erons or specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords Of Draenor Quests. The quantity of these items required can be seen in the inventory of an upgrade vendor.
It takes time to upgrade an item. It could take as long as 8 hours depending on the size of the upgrade. The upgraded item's base stats are calculated based on the item's new ilvl, perks, and other properties. This calculation determines the latest Armor Class bonus, damage dice, and other important statistics. In some cases, an upgrade can grant additional perks. These perks are offered on a table.
In rare instances, the upgrade will replace only the most expensive benefits. Occasionally, the upgrader will make other adjustments to an item, like changing the type of weapon damage or removing or adding an operative or unwieldy property. These changes are based on an item's ilvl and may require special materials, like the adamantine.
