If your SAAB 9-3 key fob starts experiencing issues turning the barrel of the lock, it may be time to replace it. Fortunately, the process is fairly simple and doesn't require you to visit an agent. You can do it at home with just a few basic tools.

You'll first need to prepare the new keys. Before you begin, ensure that the anti-theft device is disabled by placing blocks on the rear wheels, and then adjusting the handbrake. Put the key into the ignition and turn the key to the "on" position. This will activate the accessories, however, it won't start the engine. Repeat this process five times and leave the key in the on position.

Next, you'll need to get a replacement case for the old key fob. They can be found at any auto parts store, and they're usually quite affordable. Based on the model, you can even buy them without electronic components.

To open the case simply push the screwdriver with a flathead into the slot in the middle. When you've split the case, you'll have access to all of the internal electronic components. To remove the electronics employ a small screwdriver and try prying them out with a gentle force.
