The transponder chip is a security device that relays a unique code to the vehicle's immobilizer when it's put into the ignition. The immobilizer blocks the vehicle's starter motor, fuel pump and any other device which would otherwise allow it to run if not for the chip's identification code.
The key is made of metal with a cap made of plastic which houses the transponder. To remove the ignition key, you will have to use a screwdriver to get enough leverage.
