Buying a Tandem Double Buggy
If you have twins or children very similar in age, a tandem double buggy is a great choice. They're a bit smaller than side-byside buggies, and ideal for maneuvering tight spaces, such as entrances, on public transportation and on rocky terrain.
Some can be converted to travel systems that take two carrycots or child car seats. However, they are heavier and longer than single pushchairs, and may not be as stable when bumping up kerbs.
Convertible
There are a variety of options to add a second seat or making a single stroller double. The Vista V2 from UPPAbaby is a large, gorgeous stroller that can easily be converted from a single model to a double by adding the rumble seating (available separately). However, it's expensive and less maneuverable than other dual strollers because the 2nd seat is located to the left of the front seat. Nuna Demi Grow provides a similar choice but lacks storage underneath the seat when it's used as a double stroller.
Other options include all-terrain
twin buggy buggies as well as fixed-wheel joggers that can accommodate two children. They are generally more expensive, however they're designed for long trips over rough terrain, and may have more resale value.
Reclining the seat independently
If you want a
cheap double pushchair stroller which can accommodate children of different age groups, you'll require one with an independent recliner for both seats. This allows your child of a higher age to relax in the back while the baby is in the bassinet and the reverse.
Think about the width of your stroller, as this will determine the ease of you to maneuver through doors and on public transport. If your doorways are very narrow, you might want to consider a side-by-side pushchair such as the Mountain Buggy Duet. It has a footprint similar to a single stroller, but can still accommodate two seats and car seat adaptors.
Tandem buggies are typically longer than side by side models, making them more difficult to maneuver around and down kerbs. However, they can accommodate more combinations of car seats/car seats/seats and are an excellent choice for twins and siblings of different ages. They also tend to be more expensive than single-to-
small double stroller buggies but are a worthwhile investment if you plan to keep it for a long time and will retain a decent amount of resale value should you decide to sell it off after your children have grown out of it.
Another crucial thing to look for is if the seat backs can recline independently of each other as this will let you put your child in the ideal position for naps or watching. This is particularly important if you have a younger child in the rear seat who may be inclined to lie down and sleep while the older child would prefer to sit up and observe their surroundings.
Certain brands have a distinctive design that allows the back of their vehicles to fully recline to a position that is nearly flat, which is ideal for infants. For example, the iCandy Orange has raised stadium-style seating and can recline both the toddler seat included and the additional RumbleSeat into multiple positions so that your children have a the option of where they want to sit, as well as offering an excellent UPF 50+ canopy that has peekaboo windows.
Wider than twin buggies
They are ideal for siblings with different age groups, and you can move around without having to worry about your children touching. They're usually a larger with one seat in front of the other. The seats can be reclined fully for newborns or in an upright position for toddlers.
A popular choice is the Mountain Buggy Duet, which is the tiniest side-by-side model available and has a footprint similar to a single buggy. It comes with an adjustable handle that makes it easier for parents to push and a handbrake which can be useful on hills that are steep. It is suitable for use right from birth, and can be used with a wide range of car seats and carrycots.
The iCandy Wave is another option. It can be folded in either mono or duo mode with just one click. Its innovative frame expands widthways to allow for a second seat and it can be used with two car seats or carrycots which makes it an ideal option for older siblings that want to sit together and share the view. It's a little longer than other models, but it isn't heavy and has a soft suspension for curbs.
There are a lot of 3-wheeler tandems inline available Check out Phil and Teds inline models or iCandy's Peach and Pear buggies, for instance they provide stability and swift steering. They are often folded down to the size of one buggie, which is helpful if you struggle with storage at home or have to lug it in and out of the boot on public transport.
Be aware that a double-wide buggy will be more heavy and more bulkier than one that is
compact double stroller. Make sure you know what you want prior to making a purchase. It will be used on trains, buses, and subways frequently so it must be easy to manage and use. You may need to juggle the car seat while taking your child to school or to nursery.
From your birth, you are a suitable candidate
You'll need a pushchair for your entire family regardless of whether you're expecting twins or if you have a child after you've had your first. Double buggies are typically heavier and bulkier, as well as more expensive than single strollers. However they are much more maneuverable in narrower doors, or around obstacles like curbs. Many are also compatible with piggyback ride-along boards (either from the manufacturer or as a separate accessory purchase) to allow you to transport three children at a time.
Tandem pushchairs place one child ahead of the other. They're a good choice if your children are of similar ages and are good friends. They're not completely safe. Siblings seated side-by-side may kick or punch each other and children with different heights could argue over who is sitting higher. This issue can be resolved by a tandem high-low design that elevates the seat in the rear. Your child's older one isn't seated at the lower part of the car, and won't be able to get an opportunity to see.
The iCandy Wave is a good alternative for parents looking for a convertible
cheap double buggy buggy that includes a carrycot that can fit both a newborn and an older child. It features a clever frame that can be expanded in width when you add a second seat, and folds to flattish storage. The seats are cushioned and comfortable, the straps are simple to fasten and the buckles are among the best we've seen on any of our tests. The canopies are large in size and UPF 50+ protection, and the window is peekaboo. Both seats are reclined independently.
The only downside of the iCandy is that it's a little expensive but a high-quality tandem will last for years and retain its resale value, so you'll likely recoup some of the cost over the long term. The iCandy doesn't come with the same seating options as our other
