1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've tested. They are equipped with top-of-the-line motors which can generate up to 5,500 Pascals of suction force. As with other top iRobot models (including the top-rated model) they employ smart mapping technology to design detailed floor plans that avoid common obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also feature a feature called Carpet Boost that boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on bare floors, and they are particularly adept at cleaning hair from dogs. They do have some flaws however, which prevent them from being our top choice. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to getting hung up on shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of the room.

Still, it's very good to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly unfinished home or office. Plus, it's very quiet and can be used while you're at work, or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming that is available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective in mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has self-emptying docks, however. If you need to clean the mopping pad, it can be replaced with a wet one in just a few seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

It doesn't perform as well on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the most efficient robot vacuum cleaner uk vacuum/mop which could sweep the entire house, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It also did a great job cleaning a range of floors and rooms that had various flooring types, such as some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was superb and it stayed clear of fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, a dustbin on board that automatically empties into its base, and it supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming it, something we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combinations.

It also comes with a feature called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the home based on how dirty those areas tend to be.

For bigger homes it's recommended to choose one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one particular area of your home by using the app or voice commands. If you have furniture, a stair mode is also useful. Additionally, a recharge and resume function that allows your robot vacuum to continue where it left off is great for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than its price would suggest. It is a great job vacuuming, picking up 55% of the debris that was found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad that has an oscillating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to create a spot-clean. It can also be used to it to prioritize the most soiled areas for greater efficiency. The app offers a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

The twin cameras are shaped like adorable eyes. It is excellent at vacuuming, however it is more likely to get caught on low thresholds. It is also louder than other top robot hoover and mop vacuums that we've tested. It also has an app that's less intuitive and a small base station that does not double as a bin to empty.
