Safety
Choosing the
best cot beds crib newborn is crucial to your baby's health and well-being. You must ensure that it conforms to current safety standards and is free of any hazards that may cause harm to your baby as they sleep. It should be sturdy and well-constructed, without loose parts that could catch on clothing or create a choking hazard. It is also essential to follow the manufacturer's directions for assembly and use, and regularly inspect the crib for indications of wear or damage.
Examine the distance between slats. It should not be more than 2 and 3/4 inches to avoid your baby falling over or getting their limbs trapped between them. You should also be able easily reach and observe your baby in the crib. If you aren't, the slats are too close together and need to be a bit wider.
The mattress support system is an additional aspect to take into consideration when selecting a crib. It should be adjustable, so that you can lower the mattress of your crib as your child grows. This will lower the chance that your baby will fall out of the crib as they begin to crawl.
Other safety features to consider include the fitted sheet that is able to fit the mattress securely and an enduring and solid construction. You should also choose a crib with fixed sides, rather than one with drop sides, which could be hazardous for your baby. You should also share the same bedroom as your baby until they are old enough to be able to sleep on their own.
The last thing to do is make sure the crib is removed from radiators and windows, and that any hanging objects such as blind cords or curtains are not in reach. You should also take away any items that could pose the risk of choking such as pillows or blankets. Be wary of purchasing second-hand cribs because they may not have met the safety standards of today or been recalled for different reasons.
Design
It is important to remember that cribs may look the same but must still adhere to strict safety standards. This is why the majority of the
recommended cribs we reviewed have a similar layout to ensure uniformity of structural integrity. For instance, the majority of cribs have circular bars that do not have any gaps or rough areas that could entangle or pinch the

Mattress
A washable crib mattress will come in handy for newborns. Diaper leaks, baby spit up and other accidents can leave mattresses damp and filthy which can lead to mildew and other bacteria that can be harmful to infants. Choose a product that is easily cleaned with mild cleaner or cloth. Also, select a waterproof cover to prevent fluids from entering the mattress.
Look for a mattress rated for up to 10 years, so that it is suitable for toddlers. Many of the mattresses we've reviewed here are reversible, with infant and toddler side. This allows you to use them from the time of birth until your child is ready for their own bed.
A mattress that is firm for the crib is ideal, as it will support their spines as they are developing. A mattress that is firm and sturdy will also lower the chance of SIDS. This is due to the fact that mattresses that are soft increase the possibility that a child's head will sink into it.
Examine the label on the mattress to make sure it meets Consumer Product Safety Commission standards. The CPSC requires that mattresses be tested for flammability, waterproofing lead, as well as other chemicals that could pose risk to infants. You can also find certifications such as Greenguard, CertiPUR and GOTS which prove that the mattress has been tested for volatile organic compounds that can affect infants' nervous and respiratory systems.
The weight of the crib mattress is another factor to take into consideration. If you're unable to lift heavy objects or you don't wish to move a heavy item it is possible to choose a mattress that is lighter. Newton Wovenaire, for example weighs only 8 pounds while Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress – Dual Firmness weighs 20 lbs. This makes it one of the heavier mattresses featured in this review. It's also made of foam instead of inners with woven-core that makes it much easier to move around compared with the heavier coil mattress.
Assembly
A crib that's simple to put together is great for parents with young children. You should choose the crib that has hardware that is securely secured and with no sharp edges or rough patches that could rub the skin of your baby. Beware of cribs with drop-sides, or headboard/footboard cutouts These features aren't compatible with the current safety standards.
If you're looking for a crib, bear in mind that you'll probably need to buy a separate toddler bed conversion kit (if you decide to purchase a convertible crib). Most manufacturers offer these kits on their own. They're typically inexpensive, and they'll assist your child in transitioning to larger beds more easily.
