We asked Ladina Schopf - interior designer, architect, and the founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the best one. They evaluated storage capacity and layout and energy efficiency, among other aspects.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name of the series suggests that GE’s Profile series is aimed at people who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology into their kitchen. The refrigerator is brimming with them, from an in-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a clever water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This refrigerator is costly, so I expected better.

This refrigerator is a good option, despite the slight blip. It boasts a spacious freezer compartment, which is quite uncommon in counter-depth French door refrigerators. Additionally, it holds a fair amount of frozen food when compared to similar models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is the standard for a French-door fridge at this price. It has a decent-sized freezer in the left side. But it's not the biggest one I've seen.

You can adjust the shelving in both compartments to create a custom storage setup for the items you need to store. The GE PYE22PYNFS's design for the interior is good-looking, too. The LED lighting is a nice feature. The in-door storage bins include a third shelf that can be folded down to store large items. The drawers are equipped with temperature controls so that you can set them for Beverage, Meat, or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, although I found their textured plastic coatings to be a little difficult on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes the full suite of features you'd expect from a fridge in this price range that includes Wi-Fi as well as app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices can let you control your refrigerator from anywhere in the world, and it has a ton of customization options. It also alerts you when a door is left open, when the fridge or freezer is in need of defrosting, and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill, an option found in a few GE refrigerators that allows users to choose the amount of cups they wish to pour out. It also has a countdown on the display of the fridge to display how much water you have left, but it's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

It is designed to look like a seamless piece of your kitchen, Bosch's French-door refrigerator is one of a kind. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also comes with a veggie compartment to keep fruits and vegetables fresher longer and dual compressors to ensure maximum food preservation. The Ice maker is among the best we've ever tested and produces pyramid-shaped ice that is low in water consumption. This fridge is the perfect choice for single household or kitchenettes looking for a built-in look and top of the line food preservation.

The fridge was rated the best refrigerator in our Refrigerators test, for several reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained constant at just above 0°F and never changed more than a fraction - this is crucial to avoid freezer burn. The fridge's fridge section also performed well, achieving the temperature that was set for the initial setting within an hour and keeping that temperature steady over the course of our testing.

Bosch is a household name known for its top-quality appliances. It's therefore no surprise that Bosch's smallest counter depth french door refrigerator (his explanation) depth fridge Bosch counter depth fridge can be connected to your home Wi Fi and Bosch's Home Connect. They have handles that are sunken at the front, which allows smaller people to pull them open from the bottom, but they're difficult for taller people to steer closed without slamming them. It would have been much better to have front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX fridge is a great choice for those who want to combine the aesthetics of a French-door refrigerator with a more efficient design. It has a capacity that is above average for counter-depth models and is able to cool evenly. It's also less expensive than the most expensive counter depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, making it an attractive choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

It's a basic refrigerator which may not be as attractive as some of its competitors however, it does have enough features to make it a suitable option. Its most notable characteristic is the adjustable temperature drawer that helps keep food items like veggies and meat fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water dispenser, as well as an excellent Ice machine that is fast.

Another feature that is worth mentioning is the "Chill Drawer" that sits above the two crisper bins. This drawer lets you redirect part of the fridge's cooling power directly to this area, which means you can store foods that need extra attention. This feature can be adjusted by using an outside slider that is located inside the drawer. It is also possible to use this to set a general cooling level for the entire fridge though I've found that adjusting the general settings tends produce better results than specific ones.

In my tests, I found that the temperatures in the refrigerator were fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator didn't vary significantly from 38 degrees. This is a great performance, but it does not quite make it to the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be paired with a smart thermostat to gain more precise information on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of grey-bodied stainless steel which has a "smudge-proof" finish. It does a great job of removing streaks and fingerprints, even compared to glossier stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tried.
