Teachers and students who visit the Berkeley site will find resources to help them understand and teach evolution. The materials are arranged into different learning paths such as "What did T. rex taste like?"
Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection explains that over time creatures that are more able to adapt to changing environments survive and those that do not become extinct. This process of evolution is the main focus of science.
What is Evolution?
The term "evolution" can have many nonscientific meanings, such as "progress" or "descent with modification." Scientifically it refers to a process of changing the characteristics of organisms (or species) over time. The reason for this change is biological terms on natural selection and drift.
Evolution is a fundamental tenet in the field of biology today. It is a concept that has been proven through thousands of scientific tests. Unlike many other scientific theories like the Copernican theory or the germ theory of disease, evolution does not address questions of spiritual belief or the existence of God.
Early evolutionists, such as Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather), believed that certain physical traits were predetermined to change in a step-wise way, over time.
