There's no one-size-fits-all espresso machine. We've rounded-up our top picks, starting with a superautomatic that grinds your beans and packs them into a semiautomatic which gives you the most control over your espresso.
The Breville Oracle Touch is the perfect blend between automation and the need to understand the basics of espresso-making. It's our top pick for a bean-to-cup machine.
1. Rocket Appartamento
Rocket Appartamento is a top choice for those who want to make espresso at home without having to make significant sacrifices in terms of quality. This small-footprint espresso machine was designed for those with small counter space. It combines excellent build quality and a compact footprint. It is equipped with an 1.8-liter copper heat exchange boiler as well as a commercial E61 group head so you can steam milk while making espresso at the same time.
The machine looks fantastic and features a round insert on the side panel with the steam engraved and hot water spouts. This is an upgrade to Rocket's classic design which is already impressive for a small appliance. It also includes the black pressure gauge, which shows when the boiler is ready for use.
The water reservoir and drip tray are smaller on this model than others. This means that you will have to be vigilant about emptying and refilling the machine, particularly when using it frequently. This is a cost that results in less footprint. It's not a problem specific to this model.
You can still brew plenty of coffee with this machine, and it is able to easily meet your demands. We recommend investing in a quality grinder, like the Baratza Sette Giante, to increase consistency and flavor. You can also use this machine in conjunction with the Rocket portafilter to improve the grinding process.
As a professional espresso machine The Rocket Appartamento is capable of making great drinks, and is easy to create latte art. However, it's worth noting that the machine isn't designed for beginners, and there is a bit of a learning curve for those who are upgrading from appliance-grade machines. The heat exchanger is difficult to work with, and you'll need to learn how to perform cooling flushes.
Both the Lelit Bianca and the Rocket Appartamento provide the option of connecting to a water source, that means you will always have cold,
fresh coffee maker filtering water available for your drinks. The latter, however, has a 2.25-liter water tank that is more difficult to fill than its competitors.
2. Lavazza A Modo Mio Jolie
As you might expect from a Lavazza machine this one has been designed with quality in mind. It is quick to reach the brewing temperature, which allows you to make your first cup of
uk coffee machines in less than 35 seconds. The water tank is quick and simple to refill and the lid can be removed completely to make a wide opening. You can even fill it up with tap water if that's what you prefer.
The Lavazza A Modo Mio is the smallest model in the models, but it packs a punch. At full cost, it's less than PS100 which is less than the Nespresso Essenza and similar machines from SMEG and Desea. This makes the Jolie an ideal choice for those with a limited budget or space to buy a traditional espresso maker, but who would like to experience the pleasure of authentic Italian espresso.
The Jolie is extremely easy to operate and takes up only a tiny amount of counter space. You just need to press a single button to activate the machine and again to begin dispensing your chosen pod. There's a backlight on the button so that you can easily see the amount of dispensed and you can choose to manually stop the process in case you prefer drinking the pod in smaller amounts.
This model doesn't come with a steam wand, however, you can add creamy froth to your milk using an optional milk frother. The machine is also quiet and can be used to make coffee in a small kitchen workspace.
They're not expensive, but there's an array of blends to satisfy everyone from mildest to the most demanding espresso drinkers. They are available in most supermarkets alongside regular ground coffee and coffee beans and you can also purchase Lavazza A Modo Mio compatible pods on the internet.
The Jolie and milk is a sleek capsule machine that comes with an integrated milk warmer. It comes with a 75cm power cable and plug as well as a quick-guide and warranty card, as well as a test box containing nine Lavazza pods which include six roasted (two Qualita Rossa, two Lungo Dolce and two Delizioso) and two decaffeinated (Dek Cremoso). The machine is small enough to fit under a cupboard or flat surfaces.
3. Breville BES870XL
At first glance at first glance, the Breville Barista Express looks like an espresso machine that is not within the budget of most average consumers. If you're willing invest the time to learn how to use it this is a fantastic espresso maker for home use that performs better than some of the more expensive models available. It's among the best priced in its class, and is especially good for novices who don't have an espresso machine yet--which can easily cost them $100 or more.
This model is a bit below the top of the line for Breville (their Oracle is the most expensive at $2,199) however, it's a solid choice for home baristas who are on a tight budget. It comes with plenty of adjustable features, and it even comes with a built-in burr grinder that makes the entire experience cheaper. It's also a single boiler machine that means it can only do steaming or brewing at the same time.
Breville is an incredibly newcomer to the market for espresso machines, has rapidly earned a reputation for its high-quality appliances. This machine is no exception and has enough control to let new baristas develop their skills without spending hundreds more than is necessary.
It's not without its quirks however. For instance, the hopper in this model is located on the side of the unit instead of on top--which isn't a huge deal, but it can be a little difficult to disperse multiple shots at a time. The rear position of the tank makes it difficult to see the amount of liquid left.
If you're willing to put in time learning to make use of the Breville Barista Express then it's an excellent appliance for any espresso lover at home. The only downside to the Breville Barista Express is the price which could be a stumbling block for certain buyers. For those looking for a less expensive alternative, take a look at our review of the Gaggia Classic or the La Pavoni Impresso. Both machines are similar in capability and provide a bit more control than the Barista Express. However, they cost less than the price.

In our tests we found that the OXO Brew 9 Cup produced an excellent cup of drip coffee that filled a carafe full in just 7 minutes and 41 seconds. It's slightly longer than the 6 minutes or less the Bonavita Connoisseur and the Moccamaster require but well within the range coffee experts recommend for a great cup of drip.
It also requires that you grind your own beans prior to brewing. You can select a manual grinder or a more automated model such as the Baratza Encore. It has multiple grind settings, and a hopper for whole beans.
