Weight
The weight of a double buggies will determine its ability to push. A lighter buggy is easier to lift and transport, but might not have enough suspension to handle bumps and uneven terrain.
Check the specifications of each model before purchasing. Certain double buggies have the capacity to hold a maximum weight of a person and others have an overall frame limit. Certain double buggies can fold with the seats removed, which makes them lighter and more compact. This is useful if you are limited on storage space.
The tri-fold doubles tend to be the lightest models as only one hand is required to lift the bottom and back sections. They are also narrower than side by side buggies and can fit through most doors. The iCandy Geo 3 tri-fold double is one of lighter models available. It can comfortably fit twins, or a toddler and baby.
Tandem buggies are perfect for families with growing children since they begin as a single stroller, but can be modified to include a second seat, car seat or carrycot. Some, like the iCandy Orange offer over 30 different seating options, so they can expand with your family, even with a third child. They tend to weigh more than tri-fold doubles, however they're generally easier to move across kerbs due to the weight being more evenly distributed.
Folding
The most effective double buggies for young children fold up in seconds. This feature is appreciated by our Lab experts as it allows them to fit the buggies in the back of their cars and conserve space when not being used. The Joovy Kooper X2 for example comes with straps that can be pulled up over each seat and then the whole thing folds down. Even our oldest testers could do this tri-fold in just one hand.
The lightweight Delta Children LX Side by Side is a good alternative for a small double buggie. Its light weight is a plus however, its main features are such as large pop-out canopies that have SPF 50 and peekaboo windows; swing-away bars that help youngsters climb in and out of the seats and reclined seating and leg rests for smaller kids.
Manoeuvrability
When picking a compact double stroller, you need to take into account its maneuverability. This is a good indicator of how easy it is for both children to ride in the buggy. Some pushchairs are better than others at this and include the iCandy's "cinema chair" (where the back is elevated).
The narrow tandem buggies are good at this as can side-byside designs. These buggies can be a bit larger and may be difficult to get through doors.
The UPPAbaby Vista 2 is an excellent example of this, as it's a relatively small
pushchair twin that allows for two seats to be added and an important feature - the 'piggyback' board which can accommodate an additional child.
Other smaller, three-wheeled models like the phil&teds dot extremely agile, particularly with its clever 'dot kit that transforms it into an inline buggie.
