The robots that vacuum and mop also come with a feature called Carpet Boost which boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests of floors with no carpet They are also adept in removing hair from dogs. However, they do have several flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of them is that the Q5's navigation system does not have AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to getting hung up on socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. It doesn't also come with a camera to look around corners.

However, it's a good choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also extremely quiet and can be used while you're at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming that is offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. And it's less effective at mopping, using disposable wet wipes that don't hold on very well and can't take on dried-on debris. The Q5 does have an auto-emptying dock, however. The newest model from iRobot happens to be its smartest and has advanced features like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can wash its own mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored a perfect 10 in our testing thanks to a blend of high-tech sensors, which include cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can completely self-refill and empty its base station and it has an the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with a simple mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only issue is that the X40 is still a noisy unit. This can be a concern in the mornings before work, or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, but not as much as the Ecovacs S8 MaxV Ultra or Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and a little more cost this is a capable two-in-one that should delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the best robot mop and vacuum. It has a range of advanced features that help you forget your chores. Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that can take charge of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of the combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and spot obstacles, and navigates more effectively than its more expensive rivals. It also has a front mounted camera that can detect hazards in real-time but this wasn't 100% reliable in our tests and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also comes with an option called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the home based on how dirty these areas tend to be.

If you have a larger home, you should consider selecting a robot that comes with the option of cleaning zones or spots. This lets you tell the robot which area of your home must be cleaned by using the app or voice control. If you have lots of furniture, a stairway mode is also useful. For families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be very beneficial.

The RX3 is a more efficient cleaner than you'd expect from its price tag. It does a stellar job vacuuming, removing 55% of the debris we found in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad that has an oscillating motion that cleans better than most of the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. It's self-sufficient too, with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to design cleaning schedules or to organize a spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas for greater efficiency. The app also provides access to a host of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.
