Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are hard to distinguish. Because of this, DNA testing is the only method to determine sex. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to develop a plan with a group of Lolita Blue & gold Macaw supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to eventually open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the remaining days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. These activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet
