Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are friendly and intelligent. These birds do best with well-rounded families. They can become bored quickly and will discover ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't involved enough with them. If not properly socialized macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly defined so that the chestnut fronted macaw does not feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that love to play, interact, and climb. They require at least 2 to 3 hours each day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a fun pet they also make wonderful companions for children.

Despite their adorable nature, these birds are very loud and can cause a disturbance to those living close by. They can make ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be a nuisance in apartments and condos or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their roar.

Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, which means that males and females are difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to reliably determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the birds' sex is determined and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. This is a long process, and the pet's owner has to be patient and recognize that this is a difficult task. Positive reinforcement can accelerate the process and can help to correct any behavioral issues.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also have urged her to be relocated into an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member in a plan to eventually transport her to the open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remainder of her life, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the actual ocean not a concrete tank.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that bond with their family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for 40 years. Activists from across the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

According to the latest update on the Friends of Lolita site, she consumes 115 pounds salmon a day, along with capelin, herring and squid.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year old orca was taken away from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. While the species is threatened, she lives in a tank that some consider to be too small.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see her released back into nature. Lolita who has been living at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction there for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and a crippling illness that has left her in a fragile condition.

The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates show that Toki is ageing rapidly and her health has declined.

It is unclear what specific health issues are affecting the orca, as her captor is not obliged to disclose the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease is often an integral factor in the death of captive orcas.

Despite the ongoing health issues Many are hopeful that Lolita may be closer to living in the wild than ever before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to moving the whale out of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.

The decision comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary in which she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even meet the orca thought to be her mother. Sadly these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal problem.
