Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality

Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are intelligent and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a range of members. They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners do not interact with them enough. Macaws that are not properly socialized may become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined to ensure that the Blondie scarlet macaw bird doesn't feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who love to play, climb and interact. They need to spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks, hiking and visiting local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a great pet, they are also great companions for children.

Despite their adoring appearance, these birds are very loud and can be a nuisance to those living close by. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud calls which can be annoying to those who live in apartments or condos.

The species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining the sex. Once sex has been determined, pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. This isn't a simple process, and it's essential that the pet's owner is patient and realizes that this isn't something to be undertaken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help to correct any issues with behavior.

Lolita's Care

For decades activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Unfortunately, she never got the chance to return to sea.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her in danger. They also place her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member and plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington in which she could reside for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

As is the case with any animal species in captivity, a captive gold and blue macaw's well-being is based on a balanced diet. These beautiful birds require top-quality food and plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. In captivity, a harlequin macaw well-fed is likely to live up to 60 years. Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of room to fly and exercise.

The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring and squid per day.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they feed their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in 1970. Although the species is threatened and is in a tank that many believe is too small.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is gorgeous, but her health continues to decline. She's been a source of concern for animal welfare organizations who wish to see her released back to the wild. It is not clear what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn't required to divulge the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays a role in the deaths of captive orcas.

After years of public pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean, where she can go swimming in the deep sea and possibly even be reunited with her orca mother. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
