Evolution Korea
In the past the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with the creationists, fearing that doing so might give the movement more credibility. However, silence is no any longer an option.
The STR has been fighting to get information about evolution from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestral bird. This is just one aspect of how the concept of development has evolved.
What is Evolution?
The theory of evolution is a scientific one that explains the change in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which could lead to variations in genes or whole genomes. Over the course of many generations, these changes can result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the most popular theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with traits that are advantageous are more likely to reproduce and survive than those with less advantageous traits. Over time, this differential reproduction may lead to the development of entirely new species.
The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept has had a variety of meanings since it took form in the fields of science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into a new species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.
Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process through which living creatures develop traits to improve their chances of surviving or conceiving offspring. Over time the genetic variability could lead to the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in a population. The variation in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary changes. Changes that are not genetic, like an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered evolution because they aren't passed on to future generations.
Creationists are using the argument that evolution is controversial despite the fact that it has been proven accurate by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They argue that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won some victories against evolution in textbooks for high schools. This includes the removal of all references to the evolutionary roots of humans as well as Archaeopteryx - a feathered dinosaur that is believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.
Why is Evolution Important?
Evolution is the explanation for the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also a foundation of biology, and aids scientists comprehend how living organisms operate and grow. Evolution also shows the connections between different species. Scientists study evolution in order to better understand nature and make useful discoveries such as new medicines.
The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that can explain so many aspects of the universe and life on this planet, and it has been rigorously tested and verified over many years. Many people, including some religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory of evolution. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology does not interfere with religious beliefs since it only addresses physical objects, events,

Many religious people have found a way to reconcile evolution with their beliefs. For instance some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans share an ancestral connection with other animals.
It is essential for scientists to support the teaching of evolution. In certain countries, the opposition to evolution has been growing. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made some headway in a few states. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is pushing for textbook content on the evolution of horses and their Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.
While these are disturbing developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies, and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.
The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. The reasons behind this belief are diverse. Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries, such as developing new medicines, while others do so to improve the lives of animals and plant species,

What is Creationism?
Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Although not all creationists are Christian however, many are. Creationists generally fall in two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).
The most popular type of creationist is the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal and

OECs are less well known, but they are as enthusiastic about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old, and they believe that evolution is a myth.
Both kinds of creationism deny the idea that scientific principles like biogenesis and natural selection could explain how life came to be on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles in fear that they might lose their credibility.
Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and refer to their view "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." The theory says that God creates species from scratch and allows them to change over time. These evolution changes will eventually result in new species that are similar to the original.
Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, referred to as the Great Flood. They believe that the original species were all created simultaneously, and that they developed slowly afterwards. They also reject the idea of abiogenesis and claim that the self-replicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is unattainable.
In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are, however, more flexible and permit both evolution and creationism to be included in their curriculum.
What is Creationism in Korea?
When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also the home of an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced last week that they would eliminate the mention of evolution in their books. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. STR has achieved its first victory in taking away examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. It is now focusing on removing snippets of Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution, too.
STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its aim is to root out what it regards as the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of undergraduates studying biology revealed that half of them did not believe in evolution. The root causes are unclear, but may include religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the United States.
The KACR has accomplished a lot through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly journal called Creation and an ebook. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences with a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught until today.
On August 7 and 8 in 1993, the same day that the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from the world, including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
