Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept in cleaning pet hair. However, they do have several flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. One of the Q5's shortcomings is that its navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance. It's thus susceptible to getting stuck on socks and shoes and could not navigate rooms with lots of people well during our tests. If you need to clean the mopping pad, it can be swapped for a wet one in seconds.

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact, sleek vacuum cleaner that can also mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as nimble navigation make it easy to clean, and efficient in tackling larger particles such as pet hair. It also comes with self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, but it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular design that looks more like the regular Roomba unit than the boxy units of the competitors. It's among our most appealing looking robot vacuums. iRobot's latest flagship model also is its most advanced and has advanced features like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's also the sole robot automatic vacuum cleaner/mop to score the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to a mix of high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation on its own. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

As with other iRobot models, the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit which could be a problem if you run it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to sleep.

The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device, similar to Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It comes with a multi-function dock that will automatically empty the vacuum's bin, refills the water tank, and cleans and dry mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and identify obstacles, making it more efficient than some of its premium rivals. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards, though this wasn't foolproof in our tests and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

The iRobot application is designed to guide you through the mapping process which collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no go" areas that you have marked on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to sort out your rooms with the most dirt for better performance. The app also provides access to many options, including seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.

The twin cameras are designed to resemble cute eyes. It does a good job vacuuming but is more prone to be caught by low thresholds and is more noisy than the other top robot vacuums we've tested. It also has a less user-friendly app and a small base station that can't be used as an emptying bin.
