Buying a Tandem Double Buggy
A
tandem double buggy could be a great option when you have twins or children who are close in age. They're smaller than side-by-side buggies and are ideal for maneuvering narrow spaces like entrances, on public transportation and on rocky terrain.
Many transform into travel systems that include two carrycots or car seats. They are often heavier, longer and less stable than a single pushchair.
Convertible
There are a variety of options to add a second seat or making a single stroller a double. The UPPAbaby is a spacious, gorgeous stroller. It can easily be transformed from a single stroller to a
thule double stroller by adding the Rumble seat. However, it's expensive and less maneuverable than other dual strollers since the second seat is located in front of the front seat. Nuna Demi Grow provides a similar choice however, it doesn't have storage under the seat when it is used as a double stroller.
Other options include
twin strollers for newborns buggies with all-terrain wheels, and joggers with fixed wheels that can be used to carry two kids. These are more expensive, but they are made to last longer on rough terrain and have a higher resale price.
Reclining the seat independently
If you are looking for a double stroller that can accommodate children of various age groups, you'll need one with an independent recliner for both seats. This will allow your older child to be able to relax while your baby is sleeping in a bassinet and the reverse is true.
You'll also have to consider the width of the pushchair as this will affect how easy it is to get through doors and on public transportation. If your doors are narrow, you might want to consider a side by side pushchair, such as the Mountain Buggy Duet. It has a footprint that is similar to a single stroller however can still fit two seats and car seat adaptors.
Tandem buggies tend to be larger than side-by-side models, which makes them more difficult to maneuver around and down kerbs. However they can be able to accommodate more combinations of seats/carrycots/car seats and can make an excellent choice for twins and siblings of different age groups. These buggies are more expensive than single-to-
cheap double pushchair buggies but they're well worth it if you intend to keep it for a number of years. They'll also keep a good amount of value if you decide to sell it when your kids have outgrown the buggie.
This feature will allow you to place your child in a comfortable position for naps and observation. This is especially important when you have a child younger than in the rear seat who will prefer to lay back and sleep while the older child would prefer to
sit and stand double stroller and observe their surroundings.
Some brands feature an exclusive seat design that allows the back seat to completely recline into a nearly flat position which is perfect for babies. The iCandy Orange, for example has a stadium-style seating option that can be reclined into several positions. It also offers a UPF 50+ canopy and peekaboo windows.
Larger than
twin pushchair buggies
They are great for siblings of different age groups, and you can get around without having to worry about your children touching. They are usually a little more spacious with one seat positioned behind the other. The seats can be reclined fully for newborns or in an upright position for toddlers.
Mountain Buggy Duet is a popular option. It is the tiniest design side-by-side on the market, and a footprint that is similar to one stroller. It also has an adjustable handle, making it easier for parents of different heights to push as well as a handbrake, which is useful when tackling steep hills. It is suitable from birth and is compatible with a range of car seats and carrycots, meaning it's a great travel system.
Another alternative is the iCandy Wave, which has a simple one-click to fold and is able to be used in mono or duo mode. The frame's clever design expands in width to accommodate the second chair and can be used to accommodate up to two car seats or carrycots. This makes it a fantastic choice for older siblings that would like to be seated together. It's a little bigger than the other models, but it feels light and has soft suspension for kerbs.
There are also a variety of 3-wheeler tandems inline available such as Phil and Teds inline models or iCandy's Peach and Pear buggies, for example - which provide stability and swift steering. Most of them can be folded down to the size of one buggie, which is helpful if you struggle with storage at home or need to transport it into and out of your car on public transportation.
It's worth bearing in mind that a double-buggy with a wider width will feel bulkier and heavier than a smaller single buggy So make sure you're getting what you need before you buy. You'll have to get it on and off trains, buses and subways often, so it should be easy to use and manage. You may also need to juggle it onto and off the car seat while taking your children to nursery or school so you'll need to be aware it's easy to maneuver within small spaces.
The best time to start is when you are born.
You'll need a stroller for the whole family, regardless of whether you're expecting twins or you have a second child after having your first. Double buggies are generally heavier, bulkier, and more expensive than single strollers. However they are also more maneuverable in narrower doorways, or around obstacles like curbs. They are also compatible with piggyback ride-along boards (either from the manufacturer or via an additional accessory purchase) so you can transport three children at once.
Tandem pushchairs seat one child in front of the other, so they're often a better choice when you have two children that are close enough in age to function well together. However, they're not 100% secure Side-by-side chairs may punch or kick each other, and kids on different heights can squabble over who sits higher. A tandem high-low model is able to solve this issue by elevating the seat at the rear, which will prevent your older child from sitting on the bottom and not getting the best view.
The iCandy Wave is a good choice for parents looking for an adjustable double buggy that can be converted into a carrycot that can fit both a newborn and an older child. It features an innovative frame that increases in size when you add the second child seat. It folds flat for compact storage. The cushioned seats are comfortable, the straps are easy to fasten, and the buckles are among the most comfortable we've seen on any of our tests. You can recline both seats independently and the canopy is big and spacious with UPF 50+ protection as well as windows that peek out.
The only downside to the iCandy tandem is that it is a bit costly. But a high-quality tandem will last you for a long time and will have an attractive resale value which means that in the end you'll likely recover some of the cost. It doesn't have the same variety of seating configurations that others of our top choices however the iCandy is a great choice for families who don't wish to spend a lot.
