The most advanced robots, like the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra have a dual sensor navigation system that uses an LIDAR to map out a room and a structured-light camera mounted on the front to identify objects in real-time. This allows the S8 to stay clear of common obstacles like power cords and furniture legs and can also store up to four different floor maps in its internal memory.
The majority of the models that are
affordable robot vacuum depend on bump sensors that aren't as accurate. In my testing they were able to rip through dog poop, cords, and even the shoes that were placed in the middle of the room. The Dreametech D10+ is the most value-for-money option. It has excellent carpet and hard floor pickup, good hair and tangle pickup and an almost perfect auto empty score.
A large onboard dustbin, which does not need to be emptying manually is another feature that's important. For models that mop the floor, this water tank is able to hold enough water to last for several weeks of cleaning. Karcher's RCV 5 is an excellent illustration of this. It has a big enough footprint to fit under furniture, but not so large that it is unable to fit into the space between your bathtub and toilet.
Apps
Robot vacuums are a lot like their upright counterparts and require an enormous amount of technology to get them up to speed. The result is a pretty mature market with plenty of options. Even the
best self cleaning robot vacuum models require input from their users especially when it comes to schedule cleanings, create a floor plan for your home and install virtual barriers.
You might consider a model with its own app that can determine the layout of your house and save these settings for future use. This will allow the robot vacuum to continue where it started in subsequent runs, rather than having the mapping process restarted each time.
You should also look for models that offer spot or zone cleaning. They allow you to instruct the robot vacuum to concentrate on a particular area like under the dining table after an enormous family meal. You can do this by using the app or by voice commands.
The ability to avoid objects is another feature that's available with several models. It allows the robot to detect objects in its path, such as shoes, a crate of dog toys or a crate filled with dog toys, and coach itself around it. Some are also able to detect dirt levels and adjust the cleaning intensity accordingly. They are also able to detect objects that aren't part of your flooring in your home, such as toys, furniture and food bowls.
Some robot vacuums come with additional features that are pet-friendly. These include the water dispenser that can be used to mop floors and an HEPA filtration system that reduces allergens, such as pet dust. They could also feature a quieter mode of operation to minimize the amount of noise that is generated during cleaning.
