How to Replace an replacement key audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and audi Keyless Entry the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Look replacement key for audi evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. The good news is they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly when you're looking at a Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues in your car. It is an important part of the transmission of your audi keyfob because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine of the car is spinning. When this sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and Audi Tt Key Replacement boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common feature across the Audi Key Blade 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find good ones in wrecking yards.
