World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading

The item upgrade allows players to boost the gear rating of an item up 700 points, and then add a bonus. Items can be upgraded by keeping them in inventory before heading to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading because of their unique stats. (For example the perfect rolled breakpoint armor used in melee PvP). Other items such as weapons aren't changed much after an upgrade, and aren't worth it.

Weapons

Weapons can be upgraded to boost their numeric stats like the chance to crit, attack damage PvE and damage to PvP. Weapons also come with an unchanging bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. Some weapons also come with an unaffected bonus that is activated when three or more identical weapons are placed in a group. In some instances, this bonus can add up to more than the amount of damage a weapon upgrades on its own.

The cost of upgrading a weapon varies on its rarity as well as its current level. For instance, a +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a weapon will continue to rise until it requires a higher tier of Smithing Stones, at which the amount will be reset to one.

Upgrades to weapons also reroll the stats of their base. While this is usually an excellent thing however, it could have negative consequences as well. Upgrades can make things inaccessible, unless you're exceptionally lucky.

Items of armor can also be upgraded to improve their stats. Armor

To upgrade your armor, head to one of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. There are four Great Fairy Fountains within the game and to unlock each one you have to complete an additional quest involving the Stable Trotters. Once you've completed the main quest and the associated fountains, you can talk to any Great Fairy in order to unlock the menu for upgrading armor.

Each piece of armor can be upgraded to three levels and the amount of materials and Rupees required for each will vary. In general, you're looking at anything from three to ten Red Chuchu Jellies and ten Rupees for the first upgrade, and anywhere between five Rubies and 10 Fire-Breath Horns for each subsequent upgrade. For example the Champion Leathers could be upgraded to +5 defense, allowing you to keep up with a large group of enemies in most cold conditions and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded to +20 defense, giving the protection needed to survive the full-on assault with a handful of friends.

Note that armor can't be upgraded the same way as weapons, so you'll want to focus on upgrading it to gain physical power if you're a Warrior or Spell Power in the case of Mage. It is recommended to save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor that you'll still be wearing by the end of the story, such as the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you use in the final boss fight The Monter Parts Merchant Mask.

You can also unlock some perks for your armor by presenting the jeweler in Gerudo Town 10 Twinkling Titanite. You'll typically want to keep these upgrades to the weapon that you'll use to win the game. For example, the Longsword or Battleaxe. However, it's beneficial to have a few upgrades to the helmets and chest armor so that you can get around a few monsters.

Potions

Version 1.7.2 introduced a few modifications to the mechanics of potions.
