Upgrades will give you a boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases the item level by +3. A random substat is also added to each upgrade.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current level of the equipment being upgraded however, they will always be cheaper than buying new equipment from other sources. For instance upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points, purchasing a similar piece from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to purchase tools, armor, weapon and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players from NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for various currencies, and may also be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any tool, weapon or armor. The button will show the item's next upgrade level, if there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and the current item level as well as the level of the weapon, which is more than bracers or gloves, for example. Each upgrade items cost 15 Flightstones plus a certain number of crests. Some upgrades give a discount on the Flightstones. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Many locations offer item upgraders, including the main Island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of obtaining a new recipe. This allows players to upgrade their equipment to the highest possible ilvl on all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable change is that crests have one use, so it's important to make use of them in a responsible manner.
