World of Warcraft - Item Upgrade

The upgrade feature for items allows players to increase the level of equippable weapons or armor. This boosts the stats of that gear, as well as sometimes adding buffs or rolling an affix again.

Items can be upgraded by any item upgrader NPC in the game. In general these NPCs are found in capital cities or major questing areas. Players can also find item upgraders in dungeons that have high-level bosses, or by chatting with NPCs in their garrisons for their faction.

The World of Warcraft item upgrade system allows players to improve the quality of weapons, armor and trinkets. The process is similar to that of gear reforging in Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor, but instead of using the currency appropriate to the task players must visit an item upgrader NPC to complete the process.

Upgrades can be expensive, especially for armor and weapons. Based on the upgrade track you choose, each item level increase can cost Valorstones or Crests. The cost can be prohibitive for players who do not have the resources or are unwilling to grind.

The game allows players to play a reroll of an upgraded item using a specific tool from the menu of items. This option exchanges the upgraded item for an equivalent version at level 1 that has an additional set of bonus effects. This is useful for obtaining better scores on items that are already upgraded, but could be a waste of money.

Requirements

The process of upgrading equippable items like armor, weapons and trinkets is to increase the item level. This can increase their stats, making them more powerful in battle. Players can upgrade their gear by spending the appropriate currency at an item upgrader NPC. However, players should be aware that certain upgrades require special requirements.

The initial upgrades only boost the stats of the item's base by one level, however later upgrades provide more significant enhancements. For example upgrading a weapon from level three to level six will boost the weapon's damage by an additional two levels. Additionally the upgraded item will be awarded a bonus stat, which is based on the tier it's in. The search will also reveal if the item is of an appropriate tier and whether the player could benefit from a specific upgrade.

During the upgrade process, an item will gradually grow closer to the next level, but not always reach the full upgrade bar. This process uses Growthstones and Sollant however there is an 80% chance of obtaining a fully upgraded item in just one cycle. The more levels an item attains the higher its stat boost and the more items it can upgrade to.

Upgrade components can be added to trinkets, armor, and weapons to give an attribute bonus, or a special effect, while the equipment is being worn. Certain upgrade components also have cosmetic effects. Players can purchase upgrade components by crafting, buying from vendors or the Trading Post, looting, or receiving as a reward. Players can also find upgraded items using an Upgrade extractor, or salvage with a high-tier salvage kit. Glyphs, which are placed in tools for gathering are able to be swapped without any restrictions.

A player can reroll an item to upgrade it into another item by selecting it and pressing the green button a reroll arrow. This will change the layout of the game and allow players to select up to six items to be used for "recycling". The item that is recycled can be exchanged for a level 1 item similar to it. Recycled items will not keep their level, nor the resources used to upgrade it.

The maximum upgrade level of an item is determined by the item's tier and its quality. Uncommon items can be upgraded up to the maximum level of six while Rare and Epic items can be upgraded up to level nine. Item upgrades are added to the Best item upgrader's base statistics which means that they won't increase after a certain amount.
