When an item level upgrade is upgraded, the type of item it is upgraded to. The upgrade of a normal item creates an Exceptional item while upgrading an item that is Exceptional will result in an Elite version of the same base item. The item will keep its previous upgrade stats, but will gain an extra bonus from its new base type. The bonus will be randomly selected from the following options: a chance to obtain a weapon with an increased damage range or an increased reload speed or a chance to gain an improved defense roll.

The amount of extras that you gain by upgrading is contingent on the amount of upgrades performed. Each upgrade will boost the corresponding extras by increments of 1, up to a maximum of 3. Each upgrade will also boost the stats in the main menu by +1.

Costs

There are a few costs associated with item upgrades. The first is the upgrade itself. This cost can be expensive and is dependent on the new value of the item and the number of perks it receives. Upgrades to a higher level (such as Explorer to Champion or Veteran to Heroic) are costly.

The second is the cost of the items needed to upgrade. The items used for upgrades are usually either Power Dices (dropped by monsters 21and over) or Minerals and Erons (obtainable through completing specific Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor quests). These materials can be found in the inventory of an upgrade vendor.

Upgrading an item is an intricate process that takes time. It can take up to 8 hours, depending on the magnitude of an upgrade. In rare cases the upgrade will only replace the most expensive bonuses. The upgrader could also make other adjustments to the item, for example, changing the type of damage it deals to its weapon or eliminating an operational or unwieldy feature. The cost for these modifications is based on the new ilvl of the item, and it may require a specific material like an adamantine alloy.

Success Rate

Item upgrades are based on a chance, and like any random system there is an opportunity that the upgrade won't succeed. However there are some things which can improve the chance of success. You can also choose the option of a security feature for your item upgrader mod that will safeguard your item in the event of failure. The cost of this protection will vary, but it will always be less than the cost of a new item. The safeguard is only available once per upgrade, and it will not expire until it is re-used.

The interface for the item upgrader can be a little confusing, but not difficult to navigate. The main menu is displayed on the left, and the upgrade window is on the right. The arrows on the left of the UI represent the different stages of the upgrade process. Click the question mark icon to get assistance if you're not sure what you're doing.
