The system of upgrading items in World of Warcraft provides players with the option of upgrading the levels of armor, weapons and trinkets. This process is largely identical to that of gear reforging in Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor however instead of using the currency that is appropriate, players must visit an item upgrader NPC to complete the process.

Upgrades can be costly especially for weapons and armor. Based on the upgrade path you select, each upgrade can cost Crests or Valorstones. The cost can be prohibitive for those who don't have the funds, or are unwilling to grind.

Fortunately, the game lets players roll an upgraded item using an additional tool available in the menu for items. The rerolled item is also likely to have different requirements for strength and dexterity. It is important to keep in mind that the rerolled item will not retain its original level or any of its wasted resource.

Some upgraded items are only able to be rerolled if the original item was Unique Epic, Rare, or Rare. Some exceptional items can also be suitable for rerolling, however their original stats will be replaced with a flat bonus. This means that rerolling a Rare item will result in a normal version of the same type, while rerolling an Epic item will result in an Elite version of the same type.

The highest level of upgrade an item can achieve is determined by its quality and tier.
