Buying a Tandem
Double Pram With Reversible Seats Buggy
If you have twins or children close in age, a tandem
double travel stroller buggy is a great choice. They're narrower than side-by-side buggies, and ideal for maneuvering narrow spaces like doors, on public transport and on rocky terrain.
Some are able to be converted into travel systems that can take two carrycots or child car seats. However, they are heavier and longer than single pushchairs, and may feel less stable as they bump up kerbs.
Convertible
There are a variety of options for adding a second seat or converting a single stroller to a double. The UPPAbaby V2 is large, beautiful stroller. It is easily changed from a single to a dual by adding an Rumble seat. It is more expensive and less maneuverable since the second seat is located behind the first seat. Nuna Demi Grow provides a similar choice however, it doesn't have storage under the seat when used as a double stroller.
Other options include twin buggies that have all-terrain wheels as well as joggers that have fixed wheels that can accommodate two kids. They are generally more expensive, however they're designed for long trips over rough terrain and can have more resale value.
Independent recline of the seat
If you're looking for a double buggy that can transport children of different ages then you're going to require a model with an recline independent for both seats. This will allow your older child to relax while the baby is sleeping in a bassinet, and reverse.
Take into consideration the width of your stroller and consider how easy it is for you to maneuver through doors and on public transportation. If you have extremely narrow doors, it could be worthwhile to consider a side-by-side pushchair like the Mountain Buggy Duet which has the benefit of having a footprint that is similar to a single buggy, however, it is able to accommodate two seats and car seat adaptors.
Tandem buggies generally are slightly longer than side-by-side models and so aren't as difficult to maneuver up and down kerbs, but they can accommodate a wider range of seat/carrycot/car seat combinations making them a good option for twins or siblings of various ages. They can also be more expensive than single-to double buggies, but are worth the purchase if you plan to keep it for a long time and will have a decent amount of resale value should you sell it on after your children have grown out of it.
This feature allows you to place your child in an ideal position for naps or observation. This is especially important if you have a child younger than in the rear seat who will want to lie back and relax while the older child would prefer to sit up and observe their surroundings.
A few brands have a unique seat design which allows the back seat to completely recline into an almost flat position that is perfect for babies. For example, the iCandy Orange has raised stadium-style seating and can recline the included toddler seat and the add-on RumbleSeat to multiple positions, so that your children have a the option of deciding where they will sit, as well as providing an excellent UPF 50+ canopy with windows that peek out.
Wider than twin buggies
They are perfect for siblings with different age groups, and you can move around without worrying about your children touching. They're typically a larger with one seat in front of the other. The seats can be reclined completely for newborns or in an upright position for toddlers.
A popular choice is the Mountain Buggy Duet, which is the tiniest side-by-side model available and has the same footprint as one buggy. It also has an adjustable handle, which makes it easier for parents of different heights to push and a handbrake, which is useful when tackling difficult hills. It can be used from birth and is compatible with a variety of car seats and carrycots. This means it makes an excellent travel system.
Another option is the iCandy Wave, which has the convenience of a single click to fold and is able to be used in duo or mono mode. Its innovative frame can be expanded to allow for a second seat and can be used with up to two carrycots or car seats which makes it an ideal option for older siblings that want to sit together and share the view. It's a bit longer than other models, but it still feels light and has soft suspension for kerbs.
There are many 3-wheeler tandems with inline wheels that offer stability and swift steering. Check out Phil and Teds inline models as well as iCandy Peach and Pear buggies. They are often folded into a single buggy if you are limited in space at home, or need to transport it from the car to the bus.
Be aware that a two-wheeled buggy is more heavy and bulkier than one
compact twin stroller buggy. Be sure you know what you want prior to making a buy. It is likely to be used on buses, trains and subways often, therefore it must be simple to manage and use. It is possible that you will need to move the car seat when taking your child to school or nursery.
From your birth, you are a good candidate
Whether you're expecting twins or have another child after your first, you're going to need to find a stroller that can accommodate the whole family. Double buggies are generally slightly heavier, bulkier and more expensive than single strollers, however they are also more maneuverable in narrower entrances or around obstacles like curbs. Many
double pram and pushchair buggies work with piggyback boards (available from the manufacturer or as an add-on). This allows you to transport three children at once.
tandem double buggy pushchairs put one child in front of the other, and they're often a better choice when you have two children that are close enough in age to get along well together. They're not 100% secure. Siblings seated side-by-side may kick or punch each other and children of different heights can fight over who sits higher. This issue can be resolved by a tandem high-low model that raises the seat in the back. Your child's older one isn't seated at the bottom of the car and won't get much of a look out.
The iCandy Wave is a great alternative for parents who want an easy-to-use convertible double buggy that can fit a newborn into a carrycot, and an older child in the main seat. It has a clever frame that can be expanded in width when you add a second seat. It folds flat to make it a compact storage. The seats are cushioned and comfortable, the straps easy to secure and the buckles some of the most comfortable we've seen on any of our tests. The canopy is large in size and UPF 50+ protection, and peekaboo window. Both seats can be reclined independently.
The only drawback of the iCandy is that it's expensive however, a good tandem will last a long time and retain its resale value, which means you'll probably recoup some of the cost over the long term. The iCandy doesn't come with the same seating configurations as our other top selections. However, it's an excellent choice for families that don't want spend lots of cash.
